Web Content & Development: Grey Matter

Did an install of Grey Matter tonight on the home server. Install was incredibly easy, documentation was incredibly well written, and there were zero issues during the installation. Only requires Perl to run (it exists as a bunch of CGI files), no database needed. A great set of features for how easy it is, but it doesn’t have some of the features of Movable Type and some other products. Notably missing is RSS feeds, Email and remote entry of blog entries, and a supply of nice templates to use (however, there are some “plug ins” and other user created tools that fill in these gaps).

This brings up the issue that the real impact of a well set up log style site is the style and layout of the pages. Each tool is slightly different, although use of CSS makes it a little easier to deal with.
